Asus ZenPad 8.0 (Z380KL) Review

Asus launches their  Zenpad series tablets ZenPad 8.0, ZenPad 7.0 and ZenPad C 7 in India last month.. we have got Asus Zenpad 8.0 Z380KL which is priced at Rs 14,999 here is our Review of Zenpad 8 tablet.

Design & Display

On Design Asus Zenpad 8 has a thin metallic strip around the screen which gives the impression that the device is metal but the frame and rear is made up of plastic which is good of quality an does not feel cheap.The edges boast a metallic strip, which adds to the premium feel of the tablet. This device is available in three color options: Leather Black, Pearl White, and Aurora Metallic.

On the front Asus Zenpad 8.0 comes with an 8-inch  Display with a 1280x800 resolution, an aspect ratio of 16:10 which gives ppi of  195 pixels which is a bit low on an 8-inch Display. It also comes with Corning Gorilla Glass protection on top. The display is bright and vivid, colors look punchy and black text on a white background look crisp. Viewing angles are good as well, and the screen is quite legible outdoors in bright lighting conditions. It features an  ASUS TruVivid technology for vivid details and it can be used with ease in the daylight in outdoor environment thanks to ASUS Tru2Life Outdoor Readable technology employed on it for better reading of text even in sunlight.

Above the Display, there is 2MP front-facing camera, speaker grill. Below the Display it as Asus branding on screen buttons. On the Top, there is 3.5mm audio jack and micro-USB port which is same as many other tablets have. Volume rockers and the power button is on the right side there is nothing on the left side. on Back, it has an 8MP Auto Focus rear camera, Asus, and Zenpad branding. Back cover is a fashionable embossed leather pattern, clean lines, a  slim bezel and rounded edges for a more comfortable grip. Underneath the panel is the microSD card slot, SIM card slot, as well as the connector for the tablet’s smart cases the battery is nonremovable.The device is 8.5mm thick and weights 350g, which is fairly comfortable as far as tablets go.


Asus Zenpad 8.0 is powered by a 1.4 GHz Octa-Core Qualcomm Snapdragon 615 processor instead of Intel processor which we have seen in previous gen tablets from Asus coupled with 2GB of RAM and 16GB of internal storage out of which around 11.45 GB is available for user which can be further expandable up to 64GB with microSD card also Asus is additionally offering 5GB Web storage Space, as well as 100GB Google Drive storage for two years.On performance, the tablet runs smooth without any lag or frame drop. when playing graphically-intensive games such as  Angry Birds 2 Asphalt 8, Temple run 2 There was a bit of heating issue but we didn't face any other issue while playing games or while running most of the apps, Multi-tasking. the overall performance of the tablet is fast and smooth. we tried running some benchmark apps on AnTuTu Benchmark tablets scores 29300 points. on Geekbench 3 tablet scores 580 on a Single core and 2079 o Multi-core. Quadrant benchmark scores 17871 points.



Asus ZenPad 8.0 has an  8-megapixel rear camera and  2-megapixel front camera. The front camera can capture good selfies and can be used for video chatting.  Rear camera capture some decent images but not great. Pictures taken are lack details more prominent when you see the photos on your computer. The primary camera records video at 1080p, while the secondary camera records at up to 720p.The camera app comes with a number of shooting modes, like Beautification, Auto, Manual, Night, Low Light, and even HDR and Depth of Field. standard automatic mode, a detailed manual mode, HDR, panorama and time lapse . Beautification mode lets you set a timer of up to 5 seconds while capturing photos; shots were taken in this mode remove all imperfections from your face, and like Beauty modes in other phones, give a glazed look to the photo. Zenpad has same Camera UI which Asus smartphones have and plenty of modes and settings.


Asus ZenPad 8.0 runs on Android 5.0 with the ZenUI on top it. comes with some customizations, and largely free of bloatware and comfortable to use, with apps classified and sorted into groups. There are a few apps like Amazon Kindle, CleanMaster and, TripAdvisor among others pre-loaded, but they can be easily uninstalled.  The performance of the device is quite smooth we didn't notice any lag while using apps. Zen UI also includes same features as Zenfone's like  Double tap to wake up.The phone has an Easy Mode, which removes most of the UI elements and makes the phone easier to use with the help of big icons and simple layout. You can choose which apps and widgets to add on the home screen.  Asus also lets you select the home screen options, the menu layout, and gives a number of  wallpapers, scroll effects, and icon packs when you long-press the home screen. comes with an Auto switch to Ultra saving mode.

Connectivity & Battery

On Connectivity ZenPad 8.0  include a SIM card slot with 4G support, Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n, and Bluetooth 4.0. It comes with voice calling capabilities. Voice Quality was quite audible, and we didn’t face any major call drops. On Audio device has a speaker on front which is quite loud and clear. Asus ZenPad 8.0 packs a 4000mAh battery which can deliver battery back up of 14-15 Hours while using tablet for most of the day for Playing games, watching Movies, Using the internet. the battery can last for more than one day if we used it for Normal use.

Asus Audio Cover

Asus has also launched Asus Zenpad 8.0 Audio cover accessory which is sold separately for an additional Rs. 3,000  and functions as a protective cover and add-on speaker. It requires no pairing, thanks to the direct connector pins which route audio to the DTS-tuned speaker.  it has an excellent finish and texture, and even a magnetic sensor that unlocks the tablet when you flip it open. The speaker on the audio cover is DTS-tuned and can simulate 5.1 surround sound. Audio output is heavily boosted, and using the speaker cover makes the tablet an excellent media device for both audio and video. It can be used for watching movies and TV shows but also works well as a portable speaker.   AudioWizard is smart software that complements Audio Cover's six speakers to deliver the ultimate surround sound experience on ASUS ZenPad 8.0 it has a Music Mode, Movie Mode. Smart Mode, Speech mode, Gaming mode lets you optimize the surround sound effect by adjusting settings.

Asus ZenPad 8.0 (Z380KL)  multimedia capabilities are its highlight, and we recommend you buy the Audio Cover when buying this tablet. It may cost Rs 3,000 extra, but it is worth.One drawback could be a low-resolution screen.
